My First Post as a Writer
After everything my husband Paul, brother-in-law Mike and I faced helping my mother-in-law Nancy after my wonderful father-in-law Dino passed away suddenly, I said I wanted to write a book to help others who are faced with everything needed to be done after a death. That was almost 12 years ago. I’m so glad I was able to be there with Paul as he and Mike were helping Nancy.
So many things needed to be done at the worst imaginable time ever. After my father’s wife passed away in Nov. 2014, Paul and I were with him to help make the seemingly endless calls to address everything that needed to be done. I’m a list person by nature, and took great care to write down every detail of every contact we made. That spiral-bound notebook captured everything we did. Every call, every person we spoke to, the date and time of the call and the instructions we were provided to file a claim, update or close an account or establish a new account. I’m guessing it took us at least 6 months to ensure everything was completely done.
I started writing this book when the health of the mother of Paul’s friend at work was declining. Paul was thinking of sharing the notebook pages with his friend in the event she passed away. I knew I had to write it all down. Everything we did when my sister’s husband passed away after battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Everything that happened after Dino passed away suddenly, and everything we did after my mother’s husband and my father’s wife passed away.
I told myself…I have worked in public service since 1992. I’m not a writer, but this book might help at least one person who is by the side of a friend or family member after their loved one passed away.
I found my publisher while reading the Northern Virginia magazine at my hair salon. I took a picture of the information and started to research each publisher listed. It might have been a month before I got the courage to call. I’m so glad I did and that he was interested in my story. After all, there was nothing like this book available through my internet searches or on Amazon. Yes, there are many books on grieving after the loss of a loved one, but this book guides the survivor or person helping the survivor to understand who to call and where to start. It also provides advice on so many issues you may never have considered. Lastly, the book also includes our experience when helping my father transition to the next phase in his life. I see my target audience expanding every day. Funeral homes, grief support in hospitals, retirement communities and churches or other houses of worship. Sadly death happens and hopefully this book helps the ones left behind after a loved one passes away.
Paul and my family have been wonderful and supportive. Encouraging me to share my story and step outside my comfort zone. I love them all dearly and am so thankful for their love, help and advice.
I’m excited, nervous and scared for the official book release on April 15th. As soon as my content is ready for printed copy and Kindle, it will be available on Amazon. I’ll keep you posted when that happens if it’s before the 15th. Thank you for liking my Facebook page and sharing it with friends and family.
